Wine & Entertainment

Sips of the Week

This week we talking to Wine Entertainment superstar Rex Pickett author of Sideways—the book, the musical and of course the iconic movie. Then we’ll find out about the City Winery popping up around the country where they create the perfect pairing of food, wine and music! His latest novel is Sideways 3 Chile and continues the story of Miles to South America.

About Rex: Most recently, Rex Pickett was contacted by the De Angelis Group, a large TV/Film entity based in Italy, and has been offered to travel there and write an original screenplay that will hopefully build a new Sideways brand. Entertainment One optioned a treatment titled Addicted USA, which is currently in development as a scripted TV show.

Rex Pickett has also written and directed two feature films, written numerous screenplays and TV pilots, and, most recently did a stage adaptation of Sideways, based on his novel, which was the most successful non-musical ever staged at the La Jolla Playhouse by 3-time Tony Award-winner Des McAnuff. Sideways the play now goes to the world. Pickett’s papers are archived in the Geisel Library’s Special Collections on the campus of his alma mater, UCSD.

About Rachel Driver Speckan:

After nine years immersed in the industry of all things boozy, Rachel is thoroughly dedicated to being the ultimate wine geek. She has traveled extensively, collecting vineyard rocks, eating local specialties, and drinking wine in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Greece, as well as visits to Long Island in New York, Oregon and California. And, Rachel grew up on a farm in Arkansas, with serious roots to the land and sense of place.

With a special place in her heart for edgy California winemakers, dusty Italian reds, lush and stony Savennieres, and funky American microbrews, Rachel keeps the beverage list dynamic, delicious, and well balanced.   Rachel is incessantly drinking wine, talking about drinking, encouraging others to drink, teaching about drinking, writing about drinking and eating adventures, drinking, tasting, researching, and talking about drinking. Beer and spirits are captivating subjects that Rachel likes to experiment with, but her true love is traditional and yet innovative wines with character.  She is thrilled to work in a functional winery setting , but also teach courses and host wildly exciting, exclusive wine events at City Winery as the Wine Education Director and Beverage Director!
