Fred Dexheimer, wine educator with Wines of Chile, joined us to talk about the unique terroir and fabulous white wines of Chile. Los Vascos Sauvignon Blanc, Casablancca Valley, Chile $10.99 Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite took over the Los Vascos estate (Los Vascos meaning The Basques, in honour of its Basque origins) in 1988. The Sauvignon Blanc made at Los Vascos comes from grapes purchased on long term contracts from both the Casablanca and Curicó areas. The vintages all share liveliness on the palate with pure fruit flavour. Remarkable aromatic expression in the bouquet with lemon, grapefruit and exotic fruit enhanced by the of characteristic boxwood aroma of Sauvignon. Ritual (Veramonte) Sauvignon Blanc, Casablancca Valley, Chile $17 Ritual was created as an elegant, yet approachable interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc. Only the finest estate-grown fruit from vineyard blocks known to produce intense fruit flavors and higher acidity are chosen for this wine. The resulting wine is medium bodied, featuring a rounder, more textural mouth feel with balanced acidity. Intense flavors of ripe tropical fruit mingle with hints of citrus in structured complexity from 5 months of French Oak aging. The experience ends with a long, smooth finish. Medalla Real (Santa Rita) Chardonnay, Leyda Valley, Chile $19 Color: Deep, greenish-yellow in color, Aroma: Intense bouquet that combines mineral notes with light citrus, nectarines, nuts, and a touch of oak. Taste: The palate stands out for its refreshing acidity that balances nicely with the wine’s fruitiness, good weight, silky texture, and length.
