East Coast Winning Wines

East Coast Winning Wines

Sips of the Week

Think the best wines only come from the West Coast? Think again! This week Carl Brandhorst joined us from the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association (ASWA) with some of the 2014 winning wines from all over the East Coast—GA, MD, NY and, yes, even Laurie’s home state of NJ! Then we’ll find out about this year’s Hershey Wine Festival where you can indulge in all things food & wine! Carl Brandhorst is President of the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association (ASWA), a trade group that helps promote the wine industry.  He has served as Chairman of the July 2005-2014 Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competitions sponsored by ASWA.  Carl is also a past President of the Washington, DC Chapter of the German Wine Society and currently serves on its Board of Directors.  Carl is a longstanding member of the American Wine Society (AWS) and a graduate of the AWS wine judge program. GOLD MEDAL WINNERS Cape May Winery White 100% Vidal Blanc, Cape May, NJ (4% residual Sugar) Winemaker’s Notes: This is Cape May Winery’s un-oaked Vidal Blanc. The fruit asserts itself in the form of pristine pears & subtle apricot while the vibrant, lifting acidity adds balance & richness. .  Chateau Elan Winery & Resort , 2012, Muscadry  100% Noble, Braselton, GA (2% residual Sugar) Winemaker’s Notes: From the muscadine variety called CARLOS, this wine is entirely made from Georgia grapes. The bouquet is exotic, intense, and complex; the taste profile is vibrant, full, and elegant. It is an excellent expression of the character of our state’s grape! Made in a style never seen before, it was aged in French barrels for 4 months to become an off-dry white wine that can be simply sipped on the patio as well as paired perfectly with fish, sushi, and other light style foods. 12% Alcohol SILVER MEDAL WINNERS Knob Hall Winery, 2012 Chambourcin Reserve, 88% Chambourcin, 12% Merlot,  Clear Spring, MD Winemaker’s Notes: Chambourcin – a fruity yet full-bodied red wine that is ready to drink now or can be put down for several years. Chambourcin has great colour and aromas and goes well with pork, lamb, pizza and pastas!  Thirsty Owl Wine Company, 2013 Traminette, 100% Traminette, Ovid, NY Sips of the Week can be found anywhere in the US by searching WineSearcher.com
