Sips of the Week

Start your New Year off right with these two unique wines…Happy New Year’s from The Wine Coach. May 2012 be  your best vintage ever!

1. Yannis Assyrtiko 2010, Santorini, Greece ($15.99) Assyrtiko is one of Greece’s finest multi-purpose white grape varieties. It was first cultivated on the island of Santorini, where it has developed a unique character producing excellent AOC wines. Assyrtiko has the ability to maintain its acidity as it ripens. It yields a bone-dry wine that has citrus aromas mixed with an earthy, mineral aftertaste due to the volcanic soil of Santorini. In the last 25 years Assyrtiko has been planted throughout Greece including Macedonia and Attica where it expresses a milder and more fruity character. (Info provided by All About Greek Wine. Want to know more visit www.allaboutgreekwine.com) 2.  Bodega J. Chiappella Il Vecchio Portico, Canelones, Uruguay ($13.99) East of Argentina is Uruguay where the reds are mostly based on the Tannat a grape from Southwest France which is known for the wines of Madiran. Tannat has high content of antioxidants and is one of the healthiest of the red grapes. This wine is a blend of two grapes, Tannat (50%) the signature grape from Uruguay and Cabernet Sauvignon (50%). One sniff displays aromas of plums and cherry fruits with a touch of earth and oak. Il Vecchio Portico spends 10 months in new American and French oak barrels. Wile bign in structure this wine is surprisingly smooth and its acidity makes it a food friendly wine. These wines and more are available at Wells Discount Liquors in Baltimore or at a retailer near you.
