Sips of the Week

Loveblock is the new venture of famed NZ winemaker Kim Crawford.

Loveblock Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand $25

Winemaker’s Notes: Perched right on the hilltops overlooking Marlborough’s Awatere Valley, Loveblock is far removed from the agricultural bustle in the valley below.  Loveblock is charged with creating the best wine to express this extraordinary place with its unique aspect.  New Zealand’s signature varietal tends to be bold and big.  This wine focuses on texture rather than enhanced aromatics.  In order to take some of the sharp edge off the palate, a small portion of the wine goes through natural and malolactic fermentation.

Archangel Riesling 2011, Central Otago, New Zealand $18

Winemaker’s Notes: With a hue of pale straw, this attractive wine has a bouquet of honeydew melon and lime, with hints of apricot and floral notes. On the palate, lovely ripe citrus, nectarines and a touch of ginger. A dry style wine with balanced acidity and a long mineral finish.

Featured Interview

Laurie was joined in studio by Executive Chef at Farmstead Grill, Galen Sampson. Chef Sampson is a five-star award-winning chef who has served as culinary director and executive chef of some of Baltimore’s most respected hospitality establishments, including The Dogwood Restaurant and The Harbor Court Hotel. He is widely regarded as a leader in the local field-to-plate movement and for his fresh, light, contemporary American cooking.

Returning to Baltimore in 2013, Sampson joined the Farmstead Grill and Farmstead Shack development team with the idea of putting all his knowledge to work in a restaurant that aims to make farm-to-table dining fresh, family-friendly and affordable. The twinned restaurants opened in early summer 2014 in The Shops at Canton Crossing. Sampson serves as the enterprise’s chief operating officer and executive chef.
