19 Dec The Gift of Wine
Wine is a perfect, thoughtful gift for many occasions. Here are some tips to make sure your offering is welcome:
Always tasteful. From housewarmings to birthdays, French Champagne or nice sparkling wine like Italian Prosecco or Spanish Cava is always a safe bet. For something a little more unusual, try an Ice Wine or a vintage Port.
Wine Snob? Impress a wine snob by finding unique and unusual grape varietals from more obscure regions, e.g., try a red Nero D’Avola from Southern Sicily, or grab a white Grüner Veltliner from Austria. Your wine-loving friend will appreciate your thoughtfulness and the new experience.
In the mood. Wine with chocolate is a perfect romantic gesture. Find a Banyuls (fortified Grenache) from Southern France to pair with dark chocolate, or a Brachetto D’Acqui semi-sparkling red dessert wine from Piedmont, Italy.
Wine to dine. Bringing wine to a party or dinner? Choose these crowd pleasing whites: New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, Alsatian or Oregon Pinot Gris or unoaked Chardonnay from California or Australia. For reds consider: Oregon Pinot Noir, quality Australian Shiraz ($15-20), Argentine Malbec or a Chianti Classico from Italy.
