Sips of the Week
Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache 2010, Barossa Valley, Australia $17.99

Winemaker’s Notes: A full crimson red with purple hues, this wine has a generous and bright aroma that opens to a spicy clove lift then moves into hints of white pepper and savoury notes amongst an earthy background. This is further complemented by sweet plums and red cherry fruits. Wrapped around a core of juicy redcurrant fruits, the palate combines layers of fleshy sweet flavours and a fine grained tannin finish. Smoothly balanced and eminently drinkable, this is a wine of medium weight but full on flavour. A perfect match with a juicy roast chicken with roasted potatoes, parsnips and garlic. Also suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Las Rocas Garnacha Vinas Viejas 2009, Calatayud, Spain $17.99

Winemaker’s Notes: Our 2009 Garnacha Viñas Viejas exhibits a deep ruby color, with a spicy, rich cranberry bouquet. This well-structured wine has dark cherry flavors and elegant hints of oak, with round, supple tannins and a fruit-filled finish.

Winemaking for the 2009 Garnacha Viñas Viejas followed our Las Rocas philosophy of balancing all the elements in a well-made wine with as little interference as possible with the natural processes. Cold-soaking the grapes for two weeks before fermentation helped extract the deep, intense flavors of the old-vine grapes. Fermentation of the vineyard lots lasted ten days at moderate temperatures (75°F – 80°F). We allowed all of the developing wine to complete a secondary malolactic fermentation, which softened the mouthfeel and added depth and nuance to the layered flavors in the wine. We used a balance of French and American oak barrels to condition the wine for ten months before it was bottled.
